Having a flutter on the horses can be an exciting experience, especially on big events like the Grand National, but a lot of people can be put off because it all seems so complicated with terms like stake and odds flying about. However, betting on the horse racing is not as complicated as it sounds. Here is the Betfair horse racing guide.
Stake
This is the amount of money you are betting so it could be £5 or it could be £500 but whatever you bet is known as a stake. If your horse wins then you will get your stake back plus the winnings which are calculated according to the odds.
Odds
Odds are probably the most confusing part of horse racing. When you are looking at what to bet on all the odds, which are also known as the price, can seem baffling but in fact they are just the bookmakers way of expressing the probability of a horse winning a race.
In the UK odds are normally expressed as a fraction like 4/1 (which means the horse has a 20 per cent chance of winning). In this case if you stake £1 then you will get £4 back plus your stake so will get £5 back.
But what does get a bit confusing is when you hear terms such as odds against, evens or odds on.
If you see odds like 2/1, 7/1, 50/1 et cetera then this is known as odds against. If a horse is thought to have less than a 50/50 chance of winning it is odds against. So if it does win you will get your stake plus the value of the stake multiplied by the odds against it so if you place a bet of 2/1 and stake £1 you get £3 back – £2 plus your stake.
If you see odds of 1/1 this is known as evens because there is felt to be a 50/50 chance of the horse winning. In this case you will get your stake back plus double what you bet. So if you bet £5 you get £15 (the original £5 stake plus £10 winnings).
Finally you may see odds like 1/2 and 4/7 this is known as odds on because the horse is thought to have more than a 50/50 chance of winning. This means that the odds are reversed so if your stake £10 on a 1/2 horse you get your £10 plus your stake multiplied by the odd (so in this case £10 x ½ = £5) so you would win £15 in total.

It is becoming more and more common for people to place bets on tennis. This was relatively unheard of in the past, but with the infusion of new online sports books, it is becoming quite common. The best tennis event to bet on is Wimbledon, which takes place in England every year.

Wimbledon is one of the four major events on the pro tennis tour, along with the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open. Every year, it draws the worlds best players from both the female and male ranks, including the Williams sisters, Maria Sharapova, Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal and of course Roger Federer. The level of competition that is seen at Wimbledon is not seen at any of the other major events on the tour. The event is two weeks long, culminating in the championship match between the two best players from the women’s side on the final Saturday of the tournament, and the two best male players on the final Sunday of the tournament.
When most people think of tennis, they don’t usually think of betting. But, when Wimbledon comes around each year, the betting activity that sports books see is greatly increased. Did you know that you can take part in this action risk free! Yes, it’s true! Various online sports books are giving players the chance to place free bets on Wimbledon this year. Even if you don’t know anything about tennis or have never bet on it before, you should take advantage of this. Just bet on Roger Federer!
Besides the World Cup, the Champions League is the most prestigious football championship to win anywhere in the world. Every year, it is contested by the top teams in Europe, with the final match being played in May by the two teams who have survived all the previous elimination attempts.
The Champions League is one of the most watched television events in the world, which draws an audience comparable to that of the Super Bowl. The Champions League draws just around 100 million viewers every year.

It takes a lot to win the Champions League. Not only do you need the best team, you need some luck to. No team has won back to back Champions League titles since the inception of the tournament, but multiple teams have won it more than once. Most people don’t know this, but the winning teams are actually paid prize money. This is almost unheard of in any other sporting event around the world.
If you are a fan of football, there is a good chance that you have already bet on the outcome of a Champions League match in the past. But if you haven’t, there is no better time to start than now! Many online sports books are giving away free bets, just in time for Champions League play. These promotions usually only run for a limited amount of time, so you have to take advantage of them as soon as you can! Visit an online sports book that offers free sports bets, sign up, and take advantage of the offer!
